Hi, everyone. Janice’s History Vlog here and I’m back from a great holiday! My parents and I visited some British homes that famous people lived in! Here are my top four… Hill Top, Lake District This house was my favourite. It looked like it came out of a story book, so it’s no surprise this was the home of one of my favourite writers – Beatrix Potter. She’s famous for her children’s books, like The Tale of Peter Rabbit. When we got to Hill Top, it was like we stepped back in time! My favourite part of the visit was when I saw the desk she used to write her stories. It was in a bedroom looking down on the beautiful garden. I think she saw a rabbit down there one day and thought of Peter Rabbit! Woolsthorpe Manor, Lincolnshire I loved this house. It’s just a small simple farmhouse, but it was the home of one of the greatest scientists of all time – Isaac Newton. It’s now a museum, with the rooms just like they were in his time. The kitchen was amazing! The table had a typical meal on it from Newton’s time! And guess what? In the garden is the famous apple tree that he saw the apple fall from. That’s what helped him think about gravity! Lea Hurst, Derbyshire This huge family home was where someone I really like grew up. Florence Nightingale was a nurse and she taught other people to be nurses. Her father thought women should have an education and he taught both his daughters in the study at Lea Hurst. But, my favourite room was Florence Nightingale’s bedroom. You can actually stay the night there and now I can say I slept in Florence Nightingale’s bed! 25 Brook Street, London This address was the home of two very famous musicians – George Handel and Jimmy Hendrix. Now it’s the Handel & Hendrix Museum. Handel lived in London for most of his life, at 25 Brook Street. He turned the living room on the first floor into a music room and wrote lots of his music there. In the next room is his bookcase where he kept all his musical works. Then – 200 years later – rock guitarist Jimmy Hendrix moved into the flat next door. Just think of the music those walls heard!
