What is it? A prehistoric village with 8 stone houses. Where is it? In the Orkney Islands in Scotland, UK. How old is it? It's about 5,000 years old – older than Stonehenge and even the Pyramids in Egypt! What did the houses look like inside? Each house is one big room. Families used the room as a bedroom, kitchen and living room. There was a fireplace in the middle and stone furniture like chairs, beds and cupboards. Some homes have a second room. It is small and experts aren’t sure what it was for, but some think it was a toilet. The eighth house is apart from the others and has no beds. It was probably where the villagers made their tools and jewellery and where they hung out together. What objects did experts come across in the village? They came across stone knives and other stone tools. They also discovered jewellery like necklaces, bracelets and pins. There were many pots, buttons and beads. There was even a game – a pair of dice with matching marks on each side! What did the experts find out about the villagers? From the number of homes, experts worked out that 50-100 people lived in Skara Brae. They had cows and sheep. They also grew plants. This makes them the first farmers we know of in Britain! They caught fish and other sea animals, too. The people of Skara Brae were hardworking and artistic. They also liked spending time and playing games with other people! Experts believe the villagers left Skara Brae in around 2500 BCE, but they don’t know why.
