Most people these days live in cities. A city is a place with lots of people and buildings. It covers a large area and has got skyscrapers and other tall buildings. Some of these are office blocks and others are blocks of flats. Cities have a good transport system and lots of facilities like shopping malls, sports centres and entertainment complexes. They also tend to have tourist attractions including museums, art galleries, historical buildings and public parks. Cities have lots of schools and at least one university and hospital as well as police stations and fire stations. Most of the housing in the city centre is apartments with semi-detached and detached houses further out. Towns are smaller than cities. Fewer people live in them and they often have a border where the town ends. They have lots of houses and shops and there is often a town centre and a main road that people call the high street where all the shops and facilities are. Not all towns have the same things, though. For example, one town may have a cinema, one may have a library and another town may have both. Most towns have a town hall and at least one church, one school and a park. As for services, there are usually doctor’s surgeries as well as a bus service and sometimes a train service, too. Larger towns have several supermarkets and various entertainment facilities, such as a theatre and a cinema, as well as lots of restaurants. There are some flats as well as terraced, detached and semi-detached houses. Villages are even smaller than towns and are in the countryside. The shops in a village may all be on one street. There is often a church or a central point in a village like a square, and the houses are around it. The streets are quiet and narrow and there are not many facilities for the people who live there. There may be a café, but there probably won’t be a restaurant. There may not be a doctor and there may be only one bus a day. There aren’t any flats in villages. A hamlet is also in the countryside, but it is even smaller than a village and there is usually no central point. There are houses and maybe one or two shops and that is all. There isn’t usually any transport links or facilities of any kind. Most if not all of the houses are cottages.
